When a customer makes a purchase with a card, the merchant pays a processing fee. This fee is split between several parties, including the card network, the merchant acquirer, and the card issuer. The portion that goes to the card issuer is known as interchange. Companies that offer branded cards typically receive a share of this interchange revenue.
